On January 18th, 1803, T.J. secretly requests for funds from Congress to sponsor an expedition to explore and record the geography of the area known as Louisiana and to find a route to the Pacific. (At this time, the territory is still under French control, thus the reason for the secrecy of the request.) In February Congress grants the request and two months later, T.J. sends Meriwether Lewis to Lancaster and Philadelphia to study before the journey and to begin gathering supplies. On July 18th, William Clark accepts Lewis' invitation to co-lead the expedition and from then until the launch of their expedition (May 14th,1804) the two men continue to gather their supplies (which includes items they'll need to trade with any Native Americans they encounter) and recruit members for the expedition.
