The Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown on January 17, 1893, when a group of American and European businessmen, backed by the U.S. Minister and U.S. Marine forces, staged a coup against Queen Liliuokalani. This action led to the establishment of a provisional government, and despite the Queen's appeals for restoration, Hawaii was eventually annexed by the United States in 1898, spurred by strategic and economic interests in the Pacific.
