The Treaty of Versailles, signed on June 28, 1919, officially ended World War I by setting peace terms between the Allied Powers and Germany. The treaty imposed heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany, established the League of Nations to promote peace and cooperation between countries, and significantly reshaped the map of Europe to reflect new national boundaries and the dissolution of empires. The United States never ratified the Treaty of Versailles, primarily due to a desire to not join the League of Nations.
