The Adams-Onís Treaty, also known as the Transcontinental Treaty of 1819, was an agreement between the United States and Spain in which Spain ceded Florida to the U.S. and defined the boundary between the U.S. and New Spain (now Mexico). This treaty not only resolved longstanding territorial disputes resulting from ambiguous boundaries in the Louisiana Purchase but also solidified the U.S. position for further westward expansion.
