The Embargo Act of 1807 was legislation enacted by President Thomas Jefferson that prohibited American ships from trading in all foreign ports as a response to British and French interference with U.S. merchant ships during the Napoleonic Wars. The act aimed to pressure Britain and France to respect American neutrality by depriving them of American goods, but it ended up causing significant economic hardship in the U.S. and was highly unpopular, leading to its repeal in 1809.
