The XYZ Affair was a diplomatic incident where American peace commissioners sent to France were solicited for bribes by French agents, known only as X, Y, and Z, in order to begin negotiations to stop French attacks on American shipping. The refusal of the American delegates to comply led to a wave of anti-French sentiment in the United States and an undeclared naval war between the two nations, known as the Quasi-War.
