The Navigation Acts were a series of laws passed by the English Parliament between 1651 and 1696 designed to regulate colonial trade and bolster British mercantilism. They mandated that goods from the colonies be transported on English or colonial ships and that certain "enumerated" colonial products (like tobacco and sugar) could only be shipped to England or other English colonies, increasing England's economic control over its colonies and contributing to colonial grievances that culminated in the American Revolution.
