Reports had reached Spain about the mistreatment of the natives in the New World. The Archbishop of Seville sent a group of Dominican missionaries (monks who persuaded people into Catholicism through teaching and preaching) to Haiti.

On the 4th December 1511, one of the Dominicans spoke in the cathedral and denounced the Spaniards for their tyranny and cruelty towards the natives.
