The germanic people from what now is Scandinavia, who were originally fisherman and Farmers decided they wanted to explore a bit. since the Viking boats could carry around 40 to 60 men, they were able to harass quite a lot of monasteries, that stored silver and gold. Later they also attacked the Carolingian empire. The plundering campaigns turned into trading campaigns later on. But the most money they acquired was by seizing high noble and churchman for ransom. Slave trade was a big part of their plundering as well, which they sold back in Scandinavia or in the Muslim ports. An important part of Vikings is that when they settled somewhere they intermarried a lot.
