Steady Growth of African American Population in Baltimore (9 abr 1865 ano – 11 abr 1890 ano)

Descrição:

By the end of the Civil War, the African American Population in Baltimore was approximately 28,000, making up only 13-14% of the cities population. By the year 1890, their numbers had nearly tripled, numbering about 80,000 people, but still only making up approximately 15% of the total population in the city. Rapid migration from rural areas in Maryland to Baltimore was for several reasons. Newly freedmen were eager to escape the persecution still felt in what was in many ways the rural South, as well as search for better employment opportunities presented in the industrializing city. It is important to recognize that although their numbers grew substantially, African Americans were still the the vast minority percentage-wise, at the turn of the century.
