The Meiji Restoration was the time where Emperor Meiji was Emperor of Japan and where Japan modernized and industrialized. Before Meiji, the Tokugawa Shogunate was in charge of Japan, but when Commodore Matthew Perry of the US landed in Japan with military steamships and forced Japan to sign an unfavorable trade treaty with the US. The People realized that the Shogunate was not strong enough to protect Japan and the Shogunate was overthrown. Emperor Meiji became Emperor and created a new constitution known as the Meiji Constitution that gave the People more freedom and he invested heavily in military strength, which was achieved with help from France. Favctories and locomotives were also built and Western culture was adopted in Japan.
