The Wars of Religion (France) (15 set 1562 ano – 30 out 1598 ano)

Descrição:

The French Wars of Religion were a prolonged period of war and popular unrest between Roman Catholics and Huguenots (Reformed/Calvinist Protestants).

1. Protestant ideas were first introduced to France during the reign of Francis I, who firmly opposed Protestantism.

2. The wars were interrupted by breaks in peace that only lasted temporarily as the Huguenots’ trust in the Catholic throne diminished - violence became more severe

3. One of the most infamous events of the wars was the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre on August 24, 1572, when thousands of Huguenots were killed by Catholics.

4. The proclamation of the Edict of Nantes, and the subsequent protection of Huguenot rights, finally ended the uprisings/political unrest.
