May 8-21, 1864: After the Battle of the Wilderness ended, the Army of the Potomac, led by Union General Ulysses S. Grant, briefly broke Confederate lines and ran into Robert E. Lee and his army, the Army of Northern Virginia. On May 12-13, the Union and the Confederacy had a battle that was nearly 20 hours of brutal hand-to-hand combat. This caused 18,000 Union casualties and 12,000 Confederate casualties. Then on May 21, the Union continued their march to the Confederate capital of Richmond under the orders of Grant. This battle was important because it was part of Grant's Overland Campaign.
