Alfred murdered by Godwin (16 out 1036 ano – 15 fev 1037 ano)

Descrição:

Alfred decides to cross the Channel, from Wissant to Dover. He may have had only a few men (Encomium) or a considerable force (William of Jumieges) and may have been intending to see his mother, or been planing something more ambitious. Soon after arriving, Alfred was met by Earl Godwin. Gidwin was a former ally of Emma of Normandy and a supporter of Harthacnut, but had also been a beneficiary of the Viking invasion. He may have felt threatened by the arrival of Aethelred's son and decided to throw his support behind Harold, using Alfred's death as a means of returning to favour. Godwin took Alfred under his protection, diverted him from journeying to London, and Alfred and his followers were given a feast in Guildford and shown to separate lodgings. During the night Alfred's followers were attacked and 'some of them were sold for money, some cruelly murdered; some were put in chains, some of them were blinded, some were mutilated, and some were scalped. (ASC)
Alfred was spared but cast in chains and taken to Ely in Cambridgeshire, where he was blinded. He died in Feb 1037.
