Battle of Big Black River Bridge (16 maio 1863 ano – 17 maio 1863 ano)

Descrição:

May 16-17, 1863: After the Confederates lost the Battle of Champion Hill, they began to head west, reaching the Big Black River Bridge. The Union and the Confederacy fought until the Confederacy withdrew across the Big Black on two bridges. When they crossed, they burnt the bridge and boats so the Union could not follow them. Later that day, when fleeing Confederate soldiers arrived in Vicksburg, the Union forces captured 1,800 of them. This was a major event because the Confederates could not afford to lose any of their soldiers, especially not so many at once. This weakened the Confederate army, giving the upper hand to the Union.
