The Trail of Tears was a long journey the Cherokee Indians took when they were forced off their home lands. The reason it got its name is because every 1/4 (more than 4,000) Cherokee Indians died. Some causes of death along the trail were starvation, whooping cough, cholera, typhus and dysentery. The Trail of Tears which occurred in the years 1838 to 1839, was caused by the Treaty of New Echota. This treaty traded all of the Cherokee lands east of the Mississippi river for $5,000,000 because of the discovery of gold in northern Georgia.
