Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was not an abolitionist. Lincoln could speak effectively of slavery as a moral issue. He had served in Congress in the 1840s as a Whig. He was not well known until his debates with Douglas and his election as President. Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States when the Union was divided. He led the country in its most pivotal period throughout history. He was able to successfully abolish slavery and create the plans for Reconstruction. Lincoln didn’t get to finish his second term because he was assassinated.
