April 6/7, 1862: The Confederacy wanted to attack two Union armies that were joining forces in southwestern Tennessee. The Confederates plan was to attack one of the Union armies before the other could arrive. This was important because it was known as one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, both sides suffered significant losses.
