On August 5th of 2016, the 2016 Summer Olympics began. They took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The United States ended with a total of one hundred and twenty one medals. 46 gold, 37 silver, and 38 bronze. Out of all the events, swimming won the most medals. After these Olympics, Michael Phelps retired with a total of 23 medals, 21 of them gold.
