The German army was defeated in the Battle of Stalingrad because of the Soviets tough resistance, they were unable to capture the Russian cities. Hitler then aimed towards southern Russia wanting to capture the oilfields and industrial city of Stalingrad. This is significant because it shows how the German plans failed, and started a new plan.
