Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., just as the American Civil War was drawing to a close and only six days after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee to Union forces. The assassination was planned and carried out by John Wilkes Booth as part of a larger conspiracy in an effort to rally the remaining Confederate troops to continue fighting. This was significant for ending the leadership and strong belief against slavery that Lincoln represented. This Assassination influenced all of the events which occurred during the Reconstruction Era since Lincoln was no longer in command and was not able to create reformations as he planned to.
