Ellis Island was used as a gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the United States. It was known as the busiest immigrant inspection station. Immigrants were asked series of questions like their name and how much money they had on them. If there was any visible signs of illness, immigrants would be sent home or would be sent to the island's hospital for long periods of time. Ellis Island was sometimes known as "Heartbreak Island" because of the 2% of immigrants who were not allowed entrance to the U.S. Ellis Island is important because it brought immigrants from all over the world to the United States. Over 100 million Americans today can trace back their ancestry to Ellis Island.
