303 Dakota men out of the hundreds of people who surrendered or were captured are tried in court and convicted of murdering civilians. President Abraham Lincoln then reviews the convictions and refuses the sentences of 264 prisoners, but 39 are sent to their deaths. One prisoner is pardoned before the hanging. At Mankato, December 26, 1862 the remaining 38 men are hanged, creating the largest mass execution in U.S. history.
