1968 was the year in which the peak of US troops in South Vietnam occurred. Nearly 538,000 troops were actively participating in Vietnam. In accordance with this peak level, the Johnson Administration had been in their last year of its term. This shows the ideology of LBJ's aggressive push towards ending the conflict in Vietnam, or some believed it was unneccesarily prolonging it.
