A dark day for the United States in the midst Vietnam War, Kennedy's assassination had lasting effects on the conflict both domestically and internationally. The successor of Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, was willing to go full throttle into the Vietnam War, whereas Kennedy had attempted to end it. LBJ felt that this policy would allow for quicker return of the troops and capsizing of the Viet Cong.
