Many hundred Dakota people who were captured during the U.S. Dakota war, 303 men are convicted of murdering multiple civilians. Abraham Lincoln commuted the sentences of 264 prisoners. Lincoln signs the order for 39 men to be sent to death by hanging. 1 prisoner is reprieved before sentencing is closed. The remaining 38 men are hanged to death in Mankato.
