Although his mentor Leucippus was the first to actually come up with the atomic theory, Democritus is noted as the first to propose the idea of atoms. His theory directly disputed that of Socrates and his followers that the world consisted of only four elements, Earth, fire, air and water. Democritus instead proposed that the world consisted of atoms (aka "Atomos") and the space between them. The original label given to it, "Atomos", directly translated into English as indivisible. These atoms were believed to be microscopic and indestructible which, as we later found out, would turn out to be remarkably accurate (Law of the conservation of mass. This was especially amazing since he was really just making a guess.
