Out of the hundreds of men captured during the war, 303 were tried in court and convicted of murdering civilians. President Lincoln commuted the sentences of 264 prisoners and signs the order condemning 39 men to death by hanging. One prisoner is pardoned at the last minute, and the 38 men that are left are hanged in Mankato on Dec 26. It was the largest mass execution in American history.
