Sibley tried to negotiate with Little Crow, but Little Crow was stubborn and wouldn’t quit. Sibley demanded surrender, but Little Crow says no. Sibley brought his troops up the Minnesota River, to Lone Tree Lake (as a mistake, they identified it as Wood Lake) and they set up camp that night. The next morning, some US soldiers searching for food came across a group of Dakota Soldiers who had been waiting to attack Sibley’s troops. The Battle of Wood Lake was the last major battle of the war, concluding in a decisive surrender for the Dakota.
