The Russian Civil War occurred from November of 1917 to November of 1921. This war was a result of the October Revolution of 1917. The day this ended was one of the most important days of the revolution, for this ensured that the revolution was finally over and finished. There was one definitive group in charge now. Some still opposed Lenin and his ideologies. The “Red Army” as it came to be known was under attack from several different anti-Bolshevik groups known as the Whites, or the anti-communist forces. These groups included monarchists, militarists, and foreign nations. These forces used armies to attempt to claim control of the now Bolshevik-controlled government. The Bolsheviks only controlled St. Petersburg and Moscow at the beginning of the war. During this war, many parts of Russia declared their independence such as Finland in March of 1918. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and World War I were one of the huge reasons that his war happened. Through this treaty, many areas of Russia had been given to Germany. During this war, the Bolsheviks expelled all of their opposition including the Mensheviks. The Red Army, controlled by the Bolsheviks, would end up having military superiority over the other groups and would secure the Bolsheviks as the leaders of the government. In the end, Lenin was able to keep off the White armies and secure his position as the head of the Russian government.
