The confederate attack on fort sumpter is when the first shots of the civil war were fired and it marked the beginning of the war. Fort sumpter was a union occupied island fort located off the coast of South Carolina. Confederate general P.G.T. Beauregard attacked fort sumpter when he caught word of Abraham Lincolns plans to resupply the fort. After 34 hours of artillery fire commander Anderson along with 86 other union soldiers surrendered the fort to the Confederates on April 13th. The confederates continued to occupy the fort for the next four years.
