Ruled on June 8th, 1925. Gitlow was arrested for distributing copies of a left-wing manifesto. He was charged as an anarchist wishing to overthrow the US government. The court ruled in favor of New York, deciding that states may restrict speech if they fear it may result an action dangerous to public security. The process of selctive incorporation began after the realization that the bill of rights only applied to federal charges.
