January 1, 1863: The Emancipation Proclamation had little immediate effect because it only freed slaves in the areas that were fighting the Union, the Confederacy. It did not free any Union states or any border states. Even though it didn't have a major effect at first, it was a huge turning point in the Civil War because it showed the Confederacy that the Union is fighting for human freedom and they won't go down without a fight.
