5 mar 1857 ano - Dred Scott v Sanford

Descrição:

This was a momentous Supreme Court case in the 1850’s. A slave named Dred Scott appealed to the Supreme Court for his freedom because he had worked for a family for many years in Missouri. They then moved to Illinois for 10 years, which is a free state. Because he was a black man living in a state that prohibited slavery, he appealed to the court that he was a free man. The court ruled that he was not, because he was still owned by the people that he worked for. They also ruled that it was unconstitutional for the government to regulate whether or not a state was allowed to have slavery or not, which came from the Missouri Compromise. This ruling was later overturned with the 13th and 14th amendments.
