September 17, 1862: Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army and Union General George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac fought against each other. McClellan let Lee's army retreat instead of destroying it all together. This made Lincoln mad, so he fired McClellan. This battle was important because it caused over 23,000 casualties and was known as the bloodiest single day battle in the Civil War. Also after the Union victory everything began to go bad for the North because of their lack of good leadership.
