April 17, 1861: Abraham Lincoln offered Robert E. Lee a position in where he would be the commander of the Federal forces. Respectfully, Lee declined because he believed he could not fight against his own people. Instead of taking Lincoln's offer, Lee resigned from the army when Virginia seceded. He then became a general of the Confederate Army. Lee was a known as a very good strategic leader, which gave the Confederacy a big advantange during the battles themselves.
