Prompted by the September 11 attacks, the U.S. launched Operation Enduring Freedom with the goal of eliminating Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Attacks began with airstrikes against the Taliban and Al Qaeda training facilities. Attacks increased in intensity until the Taliban government of Afghanistan was removed and an interim government was set up. In 2011, Osama bin Laden, the man who claimed responsibility for the 2001 attacks, was killed. 3 years later, the U.S. ended their combat operations in Afghanistan.
