After Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase, the territory was divided into two parts: the Territory of Orleans (modern day Louisiana) and the District of Louisiana (later the Missouri Territory). There was dispute on the western boundary between America and Spain, and it almost caused war. Furthermore, problems with race, religion, law, language, and culture caused delays in Louisiana's statehood. When Louisiana applied for statehood, disputes between whether parts of West Florida should or should not be added to Louisiana and other border disputes were hashed out. Another issue was that of race, as there were many free African Americans in the area but white congressmen made sure they would play no role in governmental affairs. After border disputes and other issues were solved, Louisiana entered the Union as a slave state.
