Origins of the granular synthesis go back to the late 1940s and experiments of magnetic tape. In 1981 the first commercially available Wavetable synthesiser was released, The PPG Wave 2, by German company Palm Products GmbH. The PPG wave quickly gained distinction from form traditional analog synthesisers. Notable artists to have used the Wave are; David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Hall & Oates and a-ha.
