From 1817 to 1905 there were 41,000 deaths in New Orleans. Yellow Fever was known to be a "seasonal malady" before 1905. The disease came from a passenger on a shipment of bananas or from misquotes that came from central America. The disease first started in the lower French Quarter and quickly spread over the net four months. Yellow Fever infected 3,402 people and killed 452. Because it was discovered that the disease was spread by mosquito, an anti-mosquito campaign was created. This campaign required people screen their windows and cisterns, pour a layer of oil on water in cesspools and cisterns to kill mosquitoes, and sleep under mosquito nets. If one did not cooperate with these guidelines there was a penalty of a $25 fine and would be sent to spend 30 days in jail.
