The french Indian war had taken a troll on British finances and america had to pay for there own protection with the object in mind, The sugar act was designed to crack down colonial trade with counties other than Britain especially France and Spain with colonies in the west indies while increasing revenue to pay British deb. They smuggled foreign items to avoid paying taxes. The sugar act was the first tax on the american colonies imposed by the British parliament.
