14 nov 1848 ano - The Massachusetts School for Idiotic and Feeble Minded Children was established
Descrição:
Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, who was also director of the Perkins School for the Blind, established an experimental boarding school for youth with developmental and intellectual disabilities, known as "the Massachusetts School for Idiotic and Feeble Minded Children"(Villegas, 2018). At this time, the general public believed that "idiots" could not be taught. Dr. Howe was an exception from this prevailing norm as demonstrated by his ongoing effort to prepare children with disabilities for integration into society as adults. Unfortunately, because of the general consensus of the public at the time regarding the potential of individuals with disabilities, Dr. Howe's efforts were ultimately inconsequential.
