This was when Prince Dom Pedro of the Portuguese royal family declared Brazil independent from Portugal. After the royal family returned to Portugal after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the Portuguese wanted to make Brazil a colony again, after it had been ruled as a country while Napoleon occupied Portugal. However, Brazil did not want to return to colonial status and in 1822, Dom Pedro, who had been left in Brazil, declared it independent.
