This was the day that Haiti declared and gained its independence from France. After the French had suffered many losses from battling the Haitians, Napoleon gave up on fighting them. The island that was known to the French as Saint Domingue was declared independent of France and renamed Haiti by Jacques Dessaillines, the man who defeated the French.
