Salem Witch Trials (February 1692 - May 1693) - a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, accused several local women of witchcraft. Hysteria and paranoia spread throughout colonial Massachusetts, leading to the establishment of a special court to hear the cases. 200 people were tried over a period of several months. 19 were found guilty and executed by hanging, another was pressed to death for refusing to plead, and at least five people died in jail.
