Descrição:

Language continues to grow and develop with neologisms being added all the time (e.g. meme, selfie). In recent years, there has been a trend towards using existing words in different parts of speech, for example the conversion of nouns to verbs, e.g., 'to text", 'to email', 'to google', or the conversion of verbs to nouns, e.g., 'an ask', 'a fail'. The compounding or blending of words is also an increasing source of neologisms, e.g. 'bromance', 'chillax', 'gaydar', 'frenemy'. The meanings and connotations of words also continue to change, for example, today 'sick', 'dope', 'bad' and 'wicked' are all varieties of the word 'good'. The use of the modifier 'literally' as its exact opposite has made its way into the dictionary as one of its meanings being "used for emphasis rather than actually being true". In this age, words appear to be designed to be short-lived and stop being trendy when they reach mainstream usage, (e.g. 'bae', 'on fleek'), sources such as the Urban Dictionary help us to keep up with our ever-evolving language.
