In August of 1492, Columbus set sail from Spain with his three ships, the Santa maria, Pinta, and Nina. Columbus later sighted Cuba, which he thought was China. In december he finally landed on Hispaniola, which he thought was Japan. He then established a small colony there and was the first European to explore "the Americas"
