The Dred Scott Decision was a decision made by the Supreme Court as to whether or not a slave named Dred Scott would be free because he was in free territory for so long. The Supreme Court decided that he was still a slave. This decision helped lead to the Civil War because it invalidated the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which had placed restrictions on slavery in certain U.S. territories. Northern abolitionists were outraged. The Dred Scott case became a rallying point for them and contributed to the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860, which led to more tension between the North and the South, which also led to the Civil War.
