Winged Victory of Samothrace (apr 16, 323 BC – feb 23, 27)
Description:
Built sometime during the Hellenistic period, the Winged Victory of Samothrace is an 18-foot sculpture that depicts Nike, the Greek goddess of victory stepping towards the front of a ship, possibly to commemorate a successful sea battle. Charles Champoiseau, a French diplomat and archaeologist would discover it in 1863 broken into three peices and would send it back to Paris, where it has been displayed at the Louvre since 1883.(Uknown Artist, Winged Victory of Samothrace, 323-27 B.C., Parian marble)
