Georges Cuvier(1769-1832): At this point in time, it was known that fossils were former plants and animals.Cuvier is known for establishing extinction as a fact, and he claimed that these species had been wiped out by periodic catastrophic flooding events. He was also known for advocating catastrophism, which is the theory that changes in the earth's crust during geological history have resulted chiefly from sudden violent and unusual events.
